SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 16 (AScribe Newswire) -- The James Irvine Foundation, announced today the appointment of Martha S. Campbell to the new position of Vice President for Programs. In this expanded role, Campbell will provide leadership for the Foundation's grantmaking programs and will oversee Irvine's communications and evaluation functions.
Campbell has been a member of the Irvine Foundation's senior staff since 1995. She first joined the staff as Program Director for Health, and subsequently advanced to become the Foundation's first Director of Evaluation, establishing policies and procedures to assess the impact of Irvine's grantmaking and serving as a leader in the philanthropic field on issues of evaluation and assessment. Most recently, Campbell has served as Director of Program Development and Evaluation, a position in which she has assumed additional responsibilities related to concluding of the Foundation's strategic planning process and beginning the early phases of implementation.
Resulting from its strategic planning process, the Irvine Foundation is undertaking a comprehensive effort to achieve greater impact and leverage through three areas of concentration moving forward: Arts, Youth, and California Perspectives (research and information about significant issues with long-term consequence for California). Campbell will provide oversight for all of Irvine's programmatic activities, while working with other members of the senior staff to develop integrated strategies within these three focus areas to advance the Foundation's mission and goals on behalf of the people of California.

Prior to joining the Irvine Foundation, Campbell worked for a decade in Africa, where she was the Assistant Country Director of the CARE mission in Rwanda, and developed and evaluated community development, reproductive health, child health, and HIV/AIDS prevention programs with CARE in Uganda and Sudan, and USAID in Senegal. From 1982 to 1985, she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zaire.
A native Californian, Campbell is a graduate of Dartmouth College and holds a Master's degree in Public Affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. She currently serves as a member of the board of directors of the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health and is a former board member for the Grantmakers Evaluation Network, prior to its merger with Grantmakers for Effective Organizations. She will assume her new duties at the Foundation on November 3.
