SAN FRANCISCO, April 16 (AScribe Newswire) -- Rose Resnick LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired (www.lighthouse-sf.org) is accepting art submissions for its upcoming Insights 2003, an annual, juried art exhibition featuring works by artists who are legally blind. The show will run July 16 through September 7, 2003 at San Francisco City Hall.
Insights encompasses the perspectives of an eclectic mix of painters, sculptors, fabric artists and photographers, all of who are legally blind. Each individual work of art demonstrates that a visual impairment is not an obstacle in art making, but an important element in how the artist experiences the world in which he or she exists. Collectively, the works dispel myths and presumptions commonly held about the blind artist's creative process.
"Insights creates an invaluable community space where artists who are legally blind may share their unique perception of the world through artistic expression," says Anita Aaron, Executive Director for the LightHouse.
This year's show will be juried by Frish Brandt of the Fraenkel Gallery, Tom Ferentz of Sixth Street Photography Workshop, and Judy Moran of the San Francisco Arts Commission.
The public is invited to experience the artwork firsthand and to meet Insights 2003 artists, jury and honorary committee at a reception on July 24, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at San Francisco City Hall. A complete roster of this year's participating artists will be announced in late May. Legally blind artists interested in submitting artwork to Insights 2003 may download an application online at http://www.lighthouse-sf.org/insights/. Artists may also request an artist application packet by emailing their contact information to Kari Orvik at insightscoordinator@hotmail.com or by calling 415-431-1481 x286. Submission deadline is Friday, May 2, 2003.
The annual exhibition offers audio-described tours for the visually impaired and has historically included tactile pieces. Admission is free.
Insights 2003 is presented in collaboration with the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery and made possible in part by the Grants for the Arts program of the San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund. Please visit the Insights website at http://www.lighthouse-sf.org/insights for further information and to view artwork from past shows.
