Study Reports on Public-Private Efforts to Restore Arts Education in Six Urban Areas

WASHINGTON, April 10 (AScribe Newswire) -- RAND Corporation and The Wallace Foundation today released the following advisory.

WHAT: Telephone news conference to release a new RAND Corporation report: "Revitalizing Arts Education Through Community-Wide Coordination," commissioned by The Wallace Foundation.

Arts education has suffered severe cutbacks over the last several years. The No Child Left Behind Act's emphasis on standardized tests along with city budget crises have sharply reduced the time available during the school day for arts courses and the number of arts teaching positions. The report evaluates six sites where public-private coordination has made it possible for more children to benefit from arts learning: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles County, New York City and Northern California (Alameda County.) Arts education has been found to enhance children's ability to "learn how to learn" and to develop skills of persistence and teamwork and improve the overall school experience, sustaining children's interest and enthusiasm for learning. Because research links early arts exposure to participation later in life, arts education plays a vital role in ensuring America has a robust cultural life in the future.
