WASHINGTON, June 8 (AScribe Newswire) -- Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) is joining the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) today for the nation's first candlelight vigil honoring those who have lost loved ones to drug use and abuse. The "Vigil for Lost Promise" will be held at the DEA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia at 6:30 p.m. CADCA is among several sponsors of the event, including the DEA, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Partnership for a Drug-Free America; Ginger Katz, President of the Courage to Speak Foundation, who will act as the Honorary Chairperson for the event; National Families in Action and Drug-Free Kids.
The "Vigil for Lost Promise," the first annual national ceremony of its kind, was developed by eight families who suffered the loss of a loved one to drugs. The event will bring together families and individuals from across the country who have experienced a similar loss as well as important stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse-such as those involved in drug prevention, treatment, and education. Together, they will honor the victims and increase awareness of the dangers of drug abuse.
"CADCA is proud to support such an important event. We need to increase awareness of the tragedies that can result from drug use to prevent another family from experiencing such unnecessary pain and suffering," said CADCA Chairman and CEO General Arthur T. Dean.
DEA Administrator Karen Tandy said: "Every 20 minutes, the dreams, promise, and talent of another American are snuffed out-leaving families and friends to suffer the darkness of grief. In honor of those lost and in support of those left behind, DEA illuminates the harsh reality of drugs and their tragic consequences. This vigil gives hope for an America without drugs."
