Museum of Craft and Folk Art Exhibition Earns Curatorial Excellence Award From the Apple Valley Foundation

SAN FRANCISCO, March 10 (AScribe Newswire) -- The Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Gardens arts district is the recipient of a 2005 Curatorial Excellence Award from The Apple Valley Foundation. The award has been given in recognition of the exhibition "Mithila Paintings: The Evolution of an Art Form," curated for the Museum by Malina Bakshi and Davis Szanton, which was presented at the Museum's former gallery space at Fort Mason Center from Jan. 12 through April 24, 2005.

"'Mithila Painting: The Evolution of an Art Form' traces the development of traditional wall painting by women in Bihar, India from its folkloric sources to its current status as a vibrant contemporary art form," said Kate Eilertsen, Executive Director of the Museum. "Curators Malini Bakshi and David Szanton wove the story of this cultural tradition in an enlightening and compelling exhibition."

The Museum of Craft and Folk Art exhibition is one of two shows selected as outstanding from over 37 visited last year by award reviewers at over 15 museums and art galleries in San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C. Also honored for 2005 is The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., for the exhibition "Modigliani: Beyond the Myth," curated by Dr. Mason Klein.

The Apple Valley Foundation, founded in 1953 by Newton T. Bass, has generously supported various worthy endeavors for over 50 years, primarily in Apple Valley, Calif. In 2003 the Foundation's Board of Directors inaugurated the Curatorial Excellence Award. The purpose of the Award is to acknowledge and reward superior work in the field of curatorial studies, and to encourage curators and artists to expand and improve on their ideas by visiting exhibitions of their peers. In consideration of the 2005 awards, Foundation President Frances A. Bass, along with other experts in the field of fine arts, made unannounced visits to museums and galleries and evaluated exhibitions for their creativity, evocation, didactic qualities, aesthetics, and physical presentation.

In their letter announcing the $5,000 curatorial award, Members of the Foundation wrote: "It is the desire of the Foundation that this travel grant be used by the curators to visit and experience various current art venues, to challenge their imagination and stimulate them to produce future excellent exhibitions."
